The BSF seized suspected snake venom worth around Rs 12 crore from near the Bangladesh border in South Dinajpur on Thursday.

Sources said troops of the 61st battalion of the force posted at the North Agra border outpost found a glass jar containing 2.460 kilos of snake venom that was clandestinely kept on the grass by smugglers. The container bore markings mentioned that it contains Cobra venom made in France.

“The jar was wrapped with a Bangladeshi newspaper and kept near the international boundary. We suspect it was supposed to be smuggled to India,” said a source.

Later, the BSF handed over the jar to foresters in Balurghat.

Investigations have started.
